Ethical Design

As an eco-conscious company we care deeply about the environment and celebrate its natural beauty using only hair-on hide, not fur. This means that the springbok (antelope), zebra and cowhide we use are ethically obtained from government-approved, humane wildlife conservation programs. These humane culling programs ensure the sustainability of wildlife by preventing over-breeding and preserve the animals' natural environment.

All our products are authentically handmade in South Africa. Choosing one of our designs directly supports wildlife conservation and the creation of jobs for local artisans and disadvantaged communities in South Africa.

About Us

Founding African Sanctuary became my vision when I moved to Chicago from my home in South Africa. I have always been passionate about design and I wanted to share my love of Africa and African design with others. I believe that Africa had something unique to offer and so began several years of travel and research meeting with designers, artists and local craftspeople in Southern Africa to create the best contemporary designs. Launching African Sanctuary in 2009, allowed me to realize my vision of offering products that are stylish, unique and luxurious.

At African Sanctuary, we have created a collection of handcrafted accessories and home accents in luxurious leathers and hides. Our collections celebrate the timeless appeal of African design and redefine the glamour, nostalgia and elegant sophistication of safari style.

As a company we strongly support ethical trading and sustainability. We are committed to nurturing talent, empowering African designers and protecting the environment. All the leathers and hides used are ethically obtained from government-approved conservation programs. These humane programs ensure the sustainability of wildlife by preventing over-breeding and preserve the animals' natural environment.

We adhere to fair trade practices and all designers and artists are paid a fair living wage. In choosing one of our designs, you are supporting job creation programs for disadvantaged communities in Africa.
